About the Location: Valle Crucis & Banner Elk
Vallie Crucis (literally “Vale of the Cross” in Latin) is an unincorporated community in Watauga County located in western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountain territory. It’s name is said to derive from an area where three streams converge, forming a shape resembling a cross. The community is well known for is spectacular, natural beauty, especially in the summer and fall seasons. The relatively mild climate in this part of the Blue Ridge makes for cool summers and lighter winters.
Much like a small, charming mountain town one reads about in a book, Valle Crucis is a place where the friendly locals take pride in their history and enthusiastically celebrate their holidays and festivals. The community is dotted with quaint bed and breakfast inns, small restaurants and shops. One of its best-known landmarks is the Original Mast General Store, which has been in operation since 1883 and very much remains a good old-fashioned general store (with some modern upgrades).
Of course, the allure of the area has not gone unnoticed, as Valle Crucis (along wtih neighboring areas like Banner Elk), has become a popular retreat for visitors from all over the country, including many wealthy individuals who ultimately choose to build vacation or permanent homes there. As a result, there are plenty of activities from which to choose in the area, from boutique dining and shopping to hiking, horseback riding, fly fishing, skiing and whitewater rafting.
The town of Banner Elk borders Valle Crucis to the immediate west. As many of the more affluent residents of these areas frequent the same establishments and enjoy the same amenities, Valle Crucis and Banner Elk are often mentioned collectively when referring to the preferred, low-profile luxury retreat areas at the center of the Carolina High Country. (It is not uncommon to witness a glistening Bentley cruise by a tractor on the mountain roads in either one of these areas).
Banner Elk has earned a higher degree of visibility as a luxury enclave amongst its Blue Ridge neighbors, largely due to a heavy marketing push during the last decade by many of the developers who designed homes and communities there. The area is known for it's upscale touches, such as private golf clubs and fine dining establishments like the highly-rated Artisanal, known for providing a rustic yet Manhattan-caliber dining experience.
Banner Elk offers various equestrian facilities and rests in a valley between two robust ski resorts, Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain (gaining Banner Elk the title of "ski capital of the south"). There are many unique galleries and shops in the area, where one can find beautiful hand-crafted woodwork and furnishings. Discover more at ValleCrucis.com and TownOfBannerElk.org.
About the Property
For those who seek a luxurious lifestyle in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but are not interested in the now-prevalent log and stone “mega cabins,” Meadowood House is your perfect escape. Nestled within a cluster of mountains in Valle Crucis, North Carolina, this majestic estate blends the elements of luxury and surrounding nature.
Meadowood House was developed over the course of 3 years by its owners, a married couple who were so taken with the raw beauty of Valle Crucis that they pulled off the road during a visiting drive and decided that this special place would be the location of their next home. A true labor of love, the estate is full of creative, custom touches (and even some surprises).
With nearly 6,700 interior square feet of living space, the custom-built, contemporary residence provides plenty of room for family and friends (and for lively parties, as the owners will attest). Five bedrooms and 5 and one-half baths are distributed throughout the property’s two upper floors (the lowermost level is comprised of a garage and storage area). The master suite - which can be accessed via elevator - has soaring 22-foot ceilings, a walk-in closet, sitting lounge with a fireplace and a breakfast balcony offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains from the property’s 3,400-ft. elevation.
Prominent features of the residence include a gourmet kitchen with walk-in pantry, dining room for up to 16 guests, glass conservatory, private elevator, dumbwaiter, 40,000-kilowatt generator, lofted artist’s studio with sweeping views and 2 large patios perfect for enjoying the mountain air. Separate from the main house, there is a golf cart garage, workman’s shed (with finished interiors) and a lovely dining gazebo.
In addition to its residential structures, Meadowood’s grounds are also quite unique. Behind the estate’s beautiful stone entry gate exists 13 acres of well-designed landscapes, which can be explored on foot or by cruising along the mile-long trail that winds gently throughout the property on a 4-seater golf cart (which is included with the sale).
The grounds feature gentle streams and waterfalls, rock walls that were hand-laid by local artisans, a 40,000 gallon designer Koi pond, a 200,000 gallon fishing pond with custom deck and boathouse, 5 custom-crafted deck areas fit for lively entertainment or simple relaxation, a hidden bamboo “garden lounge” and multiple vegetable gardens surrounded by beautiful flower meadows.
The Property will be sold exquisitely furnished, with minor exclusions. For a complete and more detailed list of the features of Meadowood House, please review the Bidder's Brochure, including the Property Features section.
